Abstract
The urban development patterns of the Guilan province of Iran had been studied in 2005. Guilan Province is located in north part of Iran, where the Caspian Sea meets the land. This is limited to Azerbaijan Republic from North West and surrounded by Iranian provinces from other sides. In this study, the team used Geographic Information System (GIS) and relevant maps and software. The results show that there are four patterns for urban development including Arc, Line and irregular forms. From 42 studied cities, 33 have linear form for development. Most reason of this model is a line, which based on river, road, and natural feature and limitations in the area. The second model that is highly applied by cities is irregular type of development. At least 8 cities have absolutely this model for city development. The Arc model, which is the best pattern, established in Rasht. Although, many of cities which has a baseline pattern, have not specific shape for development. Like other major cities around the world, concentrating and focusing on an available resource of water were initiated in Guilan Province’s cities development. Many of human colonies established around the water resources due to huge amount of water from precipitation and ground waters. Most of these colonies were located in riversides in the past and the road, recently. Some natural limitations like wetland, water level fluctuations of the Caspian Sea, forest and threat of wildlife and flood did concentrate the cities in some defined locations. Also, some attraction helped cities to develop more and fast. Holy shrines, beautiful beech, recreational villages and archeology points were also reasons for growing of cities in Guilan. According to results, because lacks of urban development plan for initiating of cities and traditional patterns for development, cities are not on their sustainable model. In recent decades, due to these gaps, the environment became to change and destruct. Losing of physical-chemical condition of natural waters, lack of proper services in cities, limitations for development and high cost for reshaping of cities are main effects of these conditions. Many of small and big cities in the world have same story. The study team suggests separating the development of the cities in its modern way, out of current locations as a new and old part of a city. For the current pattern in Guilan also suggest modifying for least standards of services in traditional models.
